Benefits of Frustration
Frustration is an emotional response to not getting what
you want or expect. It is experienced as a combination of
anxiety about the future and disappointment with what is
present. Frustration can be so powerful you may want to
give up on what you want or question your abilities and
skills - don't; frustration has some very important benefits.
See frustration as an indicator that what you want or expect
needs a different approach or more clarity. When you are
frustrated, stop and redefine what it is you want or expect.
Maybe the goal was too big for your present skills or knowledge
or the expectation depended on other people doing something.
Redefining what you want or expect to what is currently
possible and controllable, may be all you need to get moving
again. If that doesn't work a new approach may be what is
needed. A different approach may include getting more information,
gaining more skills, or asking for help. Sometimes what
is needed are patience and more experience.
Frustration is not a pleasant experience but a highly beneficial
one. If you remind yourself that your frustration is just
an indicator and not a reality, frustration can direct you
to success. Redefining what is wanted and taking a different
approach are the benefits of frustration and can lead to
results even better than what you wanted in the first place.
